Organized by Hong Kong College of Cardiology (HKCC), The Jockey Club ‘Heart-safe School’ Project (JCHSS) is funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. With the support of the Education Bureau (EDB) and Department of Health (DH), JCHSS is a 3-year-project started in June 2012.

The project aims to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in over 1000 Primary, Secondary and Special schools in Hong Kong. AED is simple to operate which can restore the patient’s normal heartbeats through administration of electric shocks. The survival rate can be increased substantially combination of using AED and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while reducing their likelihood of brain damage.

The project also aims to develop schools into heart-safe premises through raising schools’ awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and strengthening relevant precautionary measures. With the support of the EDB, HKCC will provide each school with a set of AED, train up school personnel on CPR and how to operate AED, and give heart-safe education support from 2012 to 2015.

Details of the project are as follows:

a. Free installation of AED,All participating schools will be provided with a set of AED

b.  Training on CPR and the operation of AED, Each participating school may nominate 10 school personnel to receive training on CPR and the operation of AED for free

c. Heart-safe education support, Education talks on heart-safe topics will be provided to the participating schools
